How to prepare for an ultrasound examination?

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound examination. Before an abdominal or internal organ ultrasound, patients are usually advised not to eat for approximately 5–6 hours. Some kidney, urinary system or pelvic ultrasound examinations may require a full bladder.

No special preparation is usually required for thyroid, breast, heart, vascular or soft tissue ultrasound examinations. Specific preparation instructions depend on the type of examination and are provided to the patient before the appointment.
