Cervical cytology (Pap test) on a glass slide is a traditional and widely used laboratory test designed to detect changes in cervical cells at an early stage and to assess the risk of precancerous or cancerous conditions.
What is this test?
It is a cytological test in which cells from the cervix are smeared onto a special slide and examined under a microscope. This method allows the structure of the cells to be assessed and any possible abnormalities to be identified.
What can be detected?
- The test helps to detect:
- Early cellular changes;
- Precancerous conditions;
- Cervical cancer;
- Cell damage caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV);
- Inflammatory or other changes.
How is the test carried out?
During the test, an obstetrician-gynaecologist takes a cell sample from the cervix using a special brush. The sample is smeared onto a glass slide, fixed and sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination.
When is this test recommended?
- As a preventive measure for women from a certain age (as advised by your doctor);
- Regularly, to detect changes at an early stage;
- If changes have been detected in previous tests;
- If HPV infection is suspected.
How long does it take to get the results?
Test results are usually ready within 3–5 days. They are presented clearly, indicating any possible changes in the cells.
