What happens during a cervical length measurement?

During a transvaginal ultrasound, you will need to undress from the waist down and lie down on the examination table. During the scan, a narrow ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina to accurately measure the length of the cervix and display images of the pelvic cavity on the ultrasound screen. A transvaginal ultrasound usually takes around 15–30 minutes.

What happens after the procedure?

Once the scan is complete, the doctor will review and interpret the images; all the information will be stored on the e-health portal. If an increased risk of preterm birth is identified, further monitoring, treatment or preventive measures may be recommended.

When will you find out the results of the cervical length measurement?

The results of the examination are usually discussed immediately after the procedure or at the end of the appointment.

Are there any risks or restrictions associated with measuring the length of the cervix?

Transvaginal ultrasound is based on the reflection of different types of sound waves from tissues of varying density, so there is no exposure to radiation. This examination is painless and safe for you and your baby if you are pregnant. After a transvaginal ultrasound, you may experience slight vaginal discharge from the gel used during the procedure, which should clear up within 24 hours.
